Kertesz was invited to Paris several times while I worked with him (twice during Mois d la photo held in the fall in Paris) and I sometimes accompanied him wandering around the streets, much as he had done in the 20s photographing people and scenes.
The number 18 indicates the number on the roll of 36 exposures. He also took a similar photo of lovers in Washington Square near his apartment.
