Exhibitions

This work, A Moment's Pleasure in Black and White, 2008, is included in the permanent collection of The Whitney Museum of Art and also the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

It is also included in her book Muse: Mickalene Thomas which was the basis for the exhibition Muse: Mickalene Thomas Photographs and tête-à-tête presented at the Aperture Foundation Gallery in New York from January 28 to March 17, 2016. Muse: Mickalene Thomas Photographs was ten-year retrospective of selections of Thomas’s paintings and photographs from 2001 to 2011. You can view installations views and other works included in the book and the exhibition here: http://mickalenethomas.com/

I have also attached a screen shot which shows A Moment's Pleasure in Black and White, hanging in the show. The exhibition is comprised of muses that includes herself, her mother, and her friends and lovers, emphasizing the communal and social aspects of art-making and creativity that permeates her work. Mickalene’s visually and conceptually layered compositions, are created through an array of media including painting, collage, photography, video and installation. Central to her artistic journey is the influence of photography, a medium she embraces as a cornerstone of her creative process.
