Provenance
According to Sarah Sterling’s invoice the description reads:Paul Outerbridge
Untitled, (frame house half fallen with age)
Vintage gelatin silver print, unsigned, 101/4 x 13” c. 1940
Provenance:
The Paul Outerbridge was purchased from the Simon Lewinsky Collection (Lewinsky Limited) on August 30, 1988. Simon Lewinsky gallery is the gallery that Sarah worked for. She says it is a vintage print. She bought a number of works from Simon Lewinsky at the time. She does have the invoice but it contains a lot of other works so she was hesitant to send a pdf of the invoice
I found 2 records where prints of this image came up at auction as Carbro color prints but I haven’t seen it come up any where else which makes me think this is an uncommon image for him
It is very different from his highly controlled still lifes, nudes, advertising images, and architectural/studio constructions which he is most known for. The subject of a collapsed or ruined structure fits into a broader interest in constructed environments and the tension between realism and artifice that runs through his work.
