Bastiaan Woudt  (b. 1987, The Netherlands) has seen a meteoric rise within the world of contemporary photography. As a self-taught photographer, studying the history of photography by devouring books and visiting exhibitions, Woudt quickly developed a signature style – abstract yet sharp, with a strong focus on detail. His preference for classic subjects and styles from Surrealism to the 1960s is visible in the portraits of models he shoots in his own studio. Through a sophisticated use of both camera and post-production techniques, he gives his own graphic and wholly contemporary twist to the classical.

"Bastiaan Woudt favours to photograph his subject against a neutral background, to avoid any distraction from the central theme of the image. He tends to zoom in on certain details of his subject; his models become anonymous and almost beyond human, pulled into abstraction. He uses a variation of camera techniques to create blurriness and movement, but he also uses digital post-production to create effects that once were created in the darkroom, like solarisation and double exposures. The filters and special effects that he uses are meticulously crafted by Woudt and have been essential for the development of his personal signature." - Willemijn van der Zwaan
