  • "After Monet is a project I began in France during the summers of 2015 and 2016 in Monet’s Gardens in Giverny, Rouen and other regions along the Normandy coast where he painted. In an effort to continue this project, I went to the south of France in July of 2022 with my Tent/Camera to walk and photograph in the fields of Arles, St Remy and other parts of Provence where van Gogh painted. I designed my Tent device to allow me to project, via a periscope, an image of the nearby landscape onto the ground inside the tent. I then use a digital camera to photograph this “sandwich” of ground and view together in one picture. With these optical tools and visual ideas in mind I wanted to be inspired and soak up something of what van Gogh may have seen and felt in his walks. In June 2023, in order to pursue my project further, I went back to Giverny and Vetheuil where Monet lived and painted. His landscape work interests me a lot because of his emphasis in linking seeing and painting. In his work these two things are inseparable!"

Cuban-born photographer Abelardo Morell surveys both the intimate and the majestic in his photographs of American people, objects, and landscapes. Initially, photographer Abelardo Morell worked in the traditions of Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand, photographing street scenes in New York. His interests later shifted to a more intimate scale, capturing black-and-white images of domestic objects. In 1991, Morell returned to the street, shooting scenes on a grander scale with a self-constructed camera obscura. The return to this centuries-old process allowed Morell to better understand the origins of his medium and capture in his artwork cities at a scale appropriate for comprehending them. In recent years, he has transformed his camera obscura into a mobile tent, moving it to locations throughout America to capture photographic landscapes on a monumental scale.

Contemporary American photographer Julie Blackmon draws inspiration from the raucous tavern scenes of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painters, creating photographs based around the people and places in her small community. Blackmon has compared her surroundings to a giant Hollywood prop closet, where a Starbucks employee out on a smoke break may appear in her next photograph, or the beauty shop she passes every day becomes the setting for a new piece. “It’s a fun perspective to have … to see the world around you as a potential story or idea. It changes how you see things. Nora Ephron said, ‘everything is copy,’ and that has really stayed with me. I live and work in a generic town, with a generic name, in the middle of America, in the middle of nowhere… but the stories unfolding around me are endless.” Both comical and serene, Blackmon’s photographs focus on scenes often involving children, family, and friends, saturated with pathos and a fascination with the everyday. Her work serves as a mash-up of pop phenomena, consumer culture, and social satire.

The history of landscape photography is rife with men behind cameras attempting to offer the definitive view of a particular land feature. (Think of Ansel Adams’ iconic images of Half Dome and Carleton Watkins’ famous compositions of Yosemite Valley.) This kind of image-making seeks to capture, as in “possess,” an objective version of the natural world that does not (and has never) existed. As a woman seeking to reimagine the genre of landscape photography, Terri's work overlaps multiple vantage points and shifts colors into oversaturated hues, exposing the fallacy of a single objective view and offering a rich, sublime subjectivity in its place that is faithful to the lived complexity of human-and-land interactions. Each of her images is a single-exposure, in-camera composition that utilizes special optics she developed. The result is not a “made-up” image, but rather one that reflects the truth of countless multiplicities: the human capacity for intimacy with land; our connection to a reality that is not merely factual but also arises from emotion and imagination; and our longing for wild, transformative experiences within and without the psyche.

European photographer, Cig Harvey, is known for her photographs exploring the narratives deeply rooted in the natural environment and familial relationships. The slow passing of time and the natural surroundings of Cig Harvey's rural home in the Midcoast of Maine has made her alert to the magic of the mundane. Harvey’s photographs depict luscious color and luminous natural light whether it be a portrait or still lives. Her early work presented stylized and cropped self-portraits including visual metaphors and elaborate costuming. Since then, she has shifted her focus to more spontaneous photographs of her life in Maine. “I want my photographs to be a jolt, they explore the magic in the world while having one foot very much placed in reality.” Cig Harvey explains of her work.

Saïdou Dicko, born in Burkina Faso, is a self-taught visual artist (photographer, videographer, installer and painter). At the age of five, Dicko, a Fulani Shepherd, learned to draw by collecting shadows of his sheep on the Sahel soils. Naturally, the shadow is present in all of his work. In 2005, he began to experiment with photography. Six months after his photographic debut, he presented his first exhibition in the 2006 Dakar Biennial Off, where he won a prize, the first in a long series. Saïdou Dicko's artistic work continues to evolve thanks to his travels, his experience, his variousinspirations and his continued quest for a better world. His new series, The Shadowed People, is a reflection of years of work and research. Fifty percent of all sales of Dicko’s work go to his association, Nafoore Cellal, which has developed a health center and pharmacy, an organic vegetable garden employing 25 women and 7 men, 2 solar- powered water towers, and 2 manual water pumps in his native Yagma pastoral zone in Burkina Faso.

Artist V. Elizabeth Turk was an undergraduate student of painting before devoting herself to
photography and holds a Master of Visual Arts from Georgia State University. For decades she
mentored young photographers as a professor of photography at Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Atlanta. The cyanotypes above were part of a collaboration between Turk and fashion designer Peter Jensen. Jensen’s sustainable, minimalist fashion meets Turk’s expertise in experimental photography to create a special collection of cyanotype prints and dresses. The distinctive dark blue of cyanotype is a result of exposing light-sensitive iron salts to sunlight and is one of photography’s oldest processes. The collaboration entitled Yours Truly: Vendla is an inspired pairing of their artistic talents.
