    Sam Taylor-Johnson, Self-Portrait, 2026

She Was I traces Sam Taylor-Johnson's psychologically rich explorations of the self through portraiture in her photography and film work. The selection begins with her early black and white photographs taken in London in the 1990s when she was a student. Then, more than a decade later, the artist returned to self-portraiture with images of herself suspended in her London studio, her body appearing weightless, seemingly held aloft by balloons. In Wired, shot in 2020 in Joshua Tree, Taylor-Johnson now reveals and makes integral to the composition the fragile support mechanisms that elevate her body above the ground in the California desert. Taylor-Johnson's powerful new series Self Portrait in Dark Water, in which she relies on water to hold her body in otherworldly suspension, will be presented to US audiences for the first time.

The exhibition will also feature a selection of works from the series Crying Men. Created between 2002-2004, Taylor-Johnson invited leading male actors to appear before her camera, sat in a moment of intimate reflection, their vulnerability exposed through the act of crying. In parallel to these recognizable individuals, the portraits of the artist's family and friends captured in the most familial of private settings, possess a semi-autobiographical quality.

  • About Sam Taylor-Johnson

Born in 1967 in London, Taylor-Johnson studied sculpture at Goldsmiths College, emerging alongside the generation of artists who came to prominence in the 1990 and was included in the groundbreaking exhibition Sensation (1997) at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. She turned from sculpture to photography and video early on, merging a cinematic sensibility with the still image. Encouraged toward filmmaking by Anthony Minghella, who produced her Palme d'Or-nominated short Love You More (2008), Taylor-Johnson went on to direct Nowhere Boy (2009), Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), A Million Little Pieces (2018), and Back to Black (2024), earning numerous BAFTA nominations.

Taylor-Johnson's studio practice has been documented in monographs published by Steidl, including a 2002 volume produced for her Hayward Gallery retrospective and Still Lives (Steidl/BALTIC, 2006). Her editorial and commissioned work ranges from the 2014 series Second Floor, photographing Coco Chanel's private Paris apartment, to an artist-book edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night. She won the Illy Café Prize at the 1997 Venice Biennale, was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1998, and was appointed OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 2011 for her contributions to British arts and culture.

Taylor-Johnson's work is held in major public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; and National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh. She has held solo museum exhibitions at Kunsthalle Zürich (1997), the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk (1997), Fondazione Prada, Milan (1998), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2000), Hayward Gallery, London (2002), and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2006). She Was I  is Sam Taylor-Johnson's second solo exhibition with Jackson Fine Art.

  • That is what it is to take a photograph — a portrait of somebody. It’s knowing and seeing, in the briefest of ethereal moments, something like a secret you have found. There’s the hit of a button and the steal of an eye, and all the history that belongs to it has been passed on. Gifted and taken.

    The Self and the Portrait

    Sam Taylor-Johnson

Sam Taylor-Johnson: The Self and the Portrait (Rizzoli, October 6, 2026) is the first comprehensive monograph on the artist, including new writing by Sam Taylor-Johnson alongside texts contributed by Lynsey Addario-award-winning photojournalist and New York Times bestselling author of It's What I Do-and Tracey Emin, the acclaimed British artist whose work has been exhibited internationally, including at Tate Modern, London; the Musée d'Orsay, Paris; and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

Sam Taylor-Johnson: The Self and the Portrait draws imagery from the artist's extensive archive. The 224-page volume captures the evolution of her vision from early floating self-portraits through to the quiet intensity of Crying Men and the behind-the-scenes imagery of her cinematic work. Signed copies will be available to purchase at the gallery.
